Tips to Prevent and Control Cockroaches from Your Home

There are five species of cockroaches commonly found in  Canada.

  • German cockroach
  • Brown-banded cockroach
  • Oriental cockroach
  • American cockroach
  • Pennsylvania Cockroach

The three main reasons cockroaches invade homes are for  food, water, and shelter. To them, almost anything is food,  including any foodstuff, paper, cloth, plants and even glue

used for binding books. They can be found in every part of the  home, but they most prefer damp environment. Since most  cockroaches are active at night, many people may be  completely unaware of their presence in their home.  Cockroaches may be a public health concern in certain  locations such as restaurants or hospitals because they have  been known to carry salmonella bacteria – the organisms  responsible for food poisoning.

Length: Adult is 10-40mm depending on species The German cockroach is the most found species in Canada,  having a length of 10-15 mm and yellowish-brown in colour.  Females laid eggs in egg cases with about 38 eggs per case.  The adult female drops each egg case close to food,1-2 days  before the egg hatches. Mating only once still the adult female can produce up to seven of these cases in a lifetime.  Under ideal conditions. Incubation of the egg cases takes  about 17 days, and a nymph can develop into an adult in  about six weeks. The nymph moults or sheds its skin five to  seven times before it reaches maturity. The life span of an  adult is 125 to 150 days. In an average home, there can be two  to three generations per year.

Cockroaches develop rapidly under suitable conditions,  preferring a warm, moist environment. Cockroaches are  mostly found in kitchens, food storage areas and bathrooms,

but sometimes they are present in all areas of the home. They  feed on a wide variety of stored food and food which may  have fallen on the surface unnoticed. For example, behind the  stove and fridge, under the sink and behind the counters.  Cockroaches can be found in crevices behind sinks, beneath  service counters, under kitchen appliances, within electrical  fuse boxes, inside telephones and even under broken wall  plaster.
